oh, wow, it's actually ringing. that's... that's really bizarre. she traces the face of the phone's cradle while it rings. what happens if he doesn't pick up? does it just... ring in his head? or can it leave a message on his phone, too? she has no idea how this is working. even suspension of belief isn't helping her out much right now. ]

[ he IS 'signed in' to the network, so he does receive her call -- a call without a name or a number (he still hasn't figured out how to get either to show up for him). ]

[ she had actually not expected it to pick up! there's a brief pause of wtf now before she reboots ]

[ there is nothing about her tone of voice that indicates she thinks this is normal ]

[ after the first few days of radio silence, he'd begun to worry she didn't want to speak with him at all. ]

[ that catches her off guard, too, but she doesn't really know what to say to it, so she glosses over it instead ]

[ 'rei?' oh, maybe he shouldn't-- too close? he doesn't want to scare her off. ]

9/22, late afternoon, phone

[ pick up pls this is urgent ]

[ oh good lord what is that noise

she knows what it is but it's so close compared to the other sounds. she does not pick up right away- she's too busy with her hands over her ears.

she hesitates and looks over at the phone. it's like getting used to a fire alarm. she goes over and picks it up quickly to make it stop.

another pause before she brings it close to her ear. ]

...hello?

Hey, do you have any spare black tights or stockings you can part with?

[ she hisses briefly and holds the phone away a little. there's another little pause as she parses the sentence. ]

Black- pardon?

Are... you okay?

Ah- yes, yes, just. A headache, I think. Migraine. If you could speak a little softer.

[ he's referring to his hypnotism which he certainly has not told her about and is not entirely keen to use on her, but--

[ Alex has a small pocket of downtime before he's to jump back into rescue efforts, so he uses it to contact a few folks. Even though things are horrid between him and Ravindra, he'd been extremely relieved to hear through word of mouth that apparently he was alive and healing the wounded.

There are others to check up on. He starts with Reilanin, calling her Network Number. His teeth are clenched so tightly with the hope that she picks up that his jaw begins to ache. ]

[ it's quiet, and it's not. there's a lot of whitenoise in the relative silence. she's moving mechanically, and even when she hears her phone go off (it still works??) she ignores it for a few moments before she can respond to it.

she slips it out of her blazer's pocket, unlocking it with a slide and lifting the phone to her ear. her voice comes across tired and colourless, and she finds herself picking out a spot to sit down, ankle sore. climbing over rubble in heels has not been the best experience. ]

Hello?

[ a small sniff and a cough, which she covers in the crook of her elbow before returning to the phone. ]

[ A rush of breath, a relieved exhale as every fiber in his body relaxes at hearing her voice on the other end. ]

Reilanin. Hi, it's Alex. Just wanted to check up on you. Are you safe?

Alex?

[ her ears perk up- almost literally. she hadn't had time to think about him, a brief consideration before she got caught up in everything. she sniffs, holding the phone a little tighter for a brief moment. ]

Yeah. Yeah, I- I'm all right. Are you- you're okay? Are you safe? Where are you?

I'm at the scene, um. [ He was going to say 'working', but that's not entirely accurate. ]

[ there's a pause, and her breath comes out in a laugh that's over as quickly as it begun. ]

Yeah... me too. I found Randall. A parrot helped me find Randall. [ another short laugh. ] And some guy with super strength called Jeffrey. We've been. We've been helping.
